Description
It's surprising to find anything quiet in the French Quarter, but steps from the beaten path of Decatur Street, Shalimar is a hidden find frequented by Quarter locals. The two-level interior is done in traditional Indian style, with Asian prints and ornate carpets on the walls. Indian music lingers through the air with the strong smell of curry.
It's extensive, clocking in at 11 pages. Always start with naan bread (flat and quickly heated). Invigorate the palette with moghlai, a mescaline lettuce with a delicious mango chutney dressing, walnut vinaigrette and a touch of goat cheese. As a main course try the subtly curried tandoori chicken in a tomato butter/curry sauce. For a bit more spice, the tandoori murgh (chicken marinated in a blend of spices) delivers.
